Strengthen farmers’ market position and create fair competitive conditions

Proposal summary
Many farming families in Germany can hardly operate profitably anymore because large supermarket chains and processing companies dictate prices. Cheap imports from abroad, often produced under lower environmental and animal welfare standards, increase the pressure further. Legal standards are to prohibit unfair trading practices in the food retail sector, producer organisations are to receive tax relief, and mandatory country-of-origin labelling is to apply to all foods. Imported agricultural products from third countries are to have to meet the same quality and environmental standards as goods produced in Germany.
