Baking soda as a basic substance in plant protection for winegrowing

Proposal summary
Baking soda, specifically potassium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate, could previously help winegrowers combat fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Since April 2025, this has no longer been permitted in Germany, even though other EU countries are still allowed to use it. Winegrowers now have to switch to more expensive products with the same active ingredient, which puts them at a competitive disadvantage. The Federal Government is to work at EU level to ensure that baking soda is officially approved again for use in plant protection.
