Proposal summary

Germany wants to permanently store CO2 from industry deep underground in the future. The existing law is being expanded for this purpose: instead of only small test facilities, commercial large-scale storage sites in Germany’s maritime area are now permitted. Uniform permitting rules will apply immediately to pipelines that transport CO2, speeding up planning and construction. Individual Länder can also decide for themselves whether they want to allow such storage sites under their territory.
