Proposal summary
Germany wants to permanently store CO2 underground to meet its climate targets. To do this, an existing law is being expanded: in future, companies will be allowed to store CO2 not only for research purposes but also commercially at large scale in deep geological formations, mainly under the seabed in the German North Sea. Clear rules are also being created for the construction and operation of pipelines that transport the CO2. Individual Länder can additionally allow CO2 to be stored under their territory on land.
