Proposal summary

Germany wants to be able to permanently store carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep geological formations under the North Sea not only for research purposes, but also commercially. Clear rules will be created for the construction and operation of pipelines for CO2 transport. Until now, it was legally unclear which rules applied to such pipelines. The law is also intended to allow individual Länder to permit CO2 storage on land. The aim is to achieve Germany’s climate targets by 2045.
