Proposal summary

Since the 2022 gas crisis, all gas customers in Germany have paid an additional levy on their gas bill, the so-called Gasspeicherumlage. It covered the costs incurred at the time to fill Germany’s gas storage facilities. This levy is now to be abolished: the Federal Government will take over the remaining debts of around 3 to 3.4 billion euros and pay them in a lump sum at the end of 2025. Gas suppliers are required to pass on the savings to their customers from January 2026.
