35 years of German unity, strengthening freedom in Germany and Europe

On the 35th anniversary of German unity on 3 October 2025, remembrance of the SED dictatorship and the Peaceful Revolution is to be strengthened. Several memorial sites and monuments are to be built or completed quickly, including the Freiheits- und Einheitsdenkmal in Leipzig and a Mahnmal für die Opfer des Kommunismus in Berlin. Schools across Germany are to give more space in lessons to the history of German division. In addition, research on the GDR is to be better anchored at universities, and the Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv is to be further digitized.
