Proposal summary

Naturalization in Germany is to become more difficult again. The waiting period for German citizenship is to rise from the current five to eight years, and the language requirements are to be increased. Anyone who entered illegally or stayed in Germany only temporarily as an asylum seeker is not to have a claim to naturalization. The background is sharply rising naturalization numbers: in 2024, 291,955 people were naturalized, 46 percent more than the year before.
