Draft law to modernize military service

Germany wants to modernize military service because the Bundeswehr needs more soldiers. Men born after 2007 will in future have to fill out a questionnaire about their willingness to do military service and undergo a medical assessment from July 2027. The service itself initially remains voluntary, but will be made more attractive. The federal government will also have the option, with the Bundestag’s approval, to reintroduce conscription if the security situation requires it.
